New Zealand’s seven most beautiful backcountry huts

New Zealand’s bush and backcountry is a hiker’s paradise, offering some of the most beautiful and remote landscapes in the world. For those who love hiking and immersing themselves in nature, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation ( or “Doc” as the Kiwis call it) maintains an extensive network of backcountry huts. These huts provide shelter, stunning views, and an authentic outdoor experience. Here’s a guide to seven of the most beautiful backcountry huts in New Zealand, perfect for your next hiking adventure.

1. Mackinnon Pass Shelter – Fiordland

Located on the famous Milford Track, the Mackinnon Pass Shelter sits high above the valleys of Fiordland National Park. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and waterfalls, making it a must-see for hikers seeking New Zealand’s rugged beauty. Though the shelter is basic, the dramatic scenery more than compensates.

As a basic shelter, it’s not designed for staying over night. The Mackinnon Pass Shelter is for short breaks and emergencies only, however at the high point of “the World’s finest walk” it offers amazing views down the Clinton Valley and is also home to the most scenic long-drop “loo with a view”.
